Some of the best days out here at Mortenson Ranch aren't the ones we plan for. They're the ones we share with folks who've never set foot on this land before. This spring we had the chance to host a group of students and faculty from the University of North Texas, and watching them roll in with their cameras and a real curiosity for the West was a reminder of why we keep the gates open for visits like this.
The crew didn't waste any time. By the end of their stay they'd put together one strong three-minute western right here on the property. They used the movie set as their backdrop, the dust as their lighting, and each other as their cast. The short they pulled together was full of laughter, grit, and the kind of inspiration that only happens when young filmmakers get turned loose in a place built for stories. I won't forget standing back and watching them figure it out in real time.
I've said it before, but I'll say it again. This ranch was never meant to be just a backdrop. From elementary school kids running across the yard to graduate film students setting up at sunrise, we love being a place where students can learn, explore, and create something of their own. Knowing that families and schools across our region can come out here and put their hands on a working piece of the West means a lot to us.
A big thank you to the University of North Texas. You made our spring better, and I'm willing to bet that short ends up being the start of something real for a few of those kids.
